Gates of Music The Gates of Music project is honoured to introduce Wil Sargisson, who is a solo Piano player. Wil Sargisson is a New Zealand-born vintage jazz pianist living in Brisbane since 2019. He began performing at jazz festivals at age 13 and spend several years abroad working on cruise ships. At age 18 his debut solo album reached the final 3 in the running for New Zealand Jazz Album of the Year. He currently works as a freelance pianist around South-East Queensland. The Gates of Music Series tries to introduce urban corners and Brisbane's icons with a piece of music playing by a local talented musician. Francis Gilfedder, who performs under the name "Frankenflute", has highly benefited from music masters from around the world who find themselves in Brisbane, Qld, Australia, and has studied their sound traditions with deep respect...in this case, he is playing his own original composition for Shakuhachi, which traditionally are the famous Japanese bamboo zen flutes, but this one is made in Australia from redgum timber, Eucalyptus Camaldulensis. The composition was commissioned by Music by the Sea at Sandgate and is entitled "Journey through the Gate". Dan started playing the trumpet at the age of 8 and grew up in a musical family environment playing in brass bands, orchestras, and big bands. Peranya Visitchantaragoon is a Brisbane based Thai classical musician, composer, and music educator. This master musician also holds a Master’s degree in music education with first-class honours from Chulalongkorn University. Peranya has worked as a volunteer music teacher with children from Thai communities in Australia and Germany and has performed nationally at various multicultural events across the country. Gates of Music The Gates of Music project is honoured to introduce Linsey Pollak, who is a solo Gaida player. In 1975 Linsey was staying with a friend in Sydney and checking out his record collection (this was still in the days of vinyl) when he came across an album called Macedonian Folk Dances (by Pece Atanasovski). It was ‘love at first listen’. He was completely entranced by the sound of the gaida (Macedonian Bagpipe) and knew that one day he would have to play this instrument. One year later while living in London he discovered the Živko Firfov Dance Group who danced dances from all over Yugoslavia and was amazed to discover that attached to this group was a band of musicians playing Macedonian folk music with traditional Macedonian instruments (Tamburas, Kaval, Tapan) but they were missing a gaida player. Ken who led the group had a gaida that Linsey could borrow and so that completed the group. 10 months later Linsey made his own Gaida. It was then that he decided to travel to Macedonia, find a gaida teacher, and immerse himself in the music and culture of Macedonia. He and his friend Adam decided to travel to Macedonia together and they bought a kombi van so that they would have somewhere to live when they arrived in Skopje. Great idea ….except the kombi broke down on the Adriatic coast and they ended up finishing their journey to Skopje by bus. This was the best thing that could have happened. If they had lived in the kombi Linsey would never have found his Gaida teacher Lazo Nikolovski. He had recently retired, had plenty of time, and was willing to teach Linsey Gaida. Linsey and Adam ended up living in Lazo's backyard in Dračevo (near Skopje) for 3 ½ months and Lazo would spend three hours every day playing and teaching Linsey Gaida. It was a dream come true. Her initial training in music was in Hyderabad and she continues to take advanced lessons from her guru Sri Indrajit Banerjee in Texas. As the Artistic Director of YATRA MUSIC, she has had many opportunities to perform on various stages including the 2018 Commonwealth Games, and collaborate with many multicultural artists.
